How to Prepare Artwork for DTF Printing

Getting great DTF prints starts with great artwork.

One of the most common causes of poor print quality isn't the printer, the transfer film, or the garment—it's the artwork file itself.

At Printcraft Services, we often receive files that are too small, blurry, low resolution, or missing transparent backgrounds. While we always try to help where possible, preparing your artwork correctly before ordering will help ensure the best possible result.

This guide explains everything you need to know before submitting artwork for DTF printing.

Why Artwork Quality Matters

DTF printing is capable of producing vibrant colours, sharp detail, and complex designs.

The printer can only reproduce what it receives.

If your artwork is blurry, pixelated, or low resolution, those issues will appear in the finished transfer.

Think of it like printing a photograph. If the original image is poor quality, printing it larger won't magically improve it.

Starting with the best possible artwork gives the best possible print.

Best File Types for DTF Printing

The preferred file format for most DTF printing projects is:

PNG Files

PNG files are ideal because they support transparent backgrounds.

Benefits include:

  • Clean edges

  • No unwanted background colours

  • Better print preparation

  • Easier gang sheet layout

Whenever possible, submit artwork as a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background.

Other Acceptable File Types

We can often work with:

  • PDF

  • SVG

  • EPS

  • AI (Adobe Illustrator)

  • High-resolution JPEG

Vector files such as SVG, EPS, and AI are especially useful because they can be resized without losing quality.

Why Transparent Backgrounds Matter

One of the most common mistakes we see is artwork supplied with a white background.

Many customers assume the white area won't print.

Unfortunately, if the white background is visible in the artwork file, it may become part of the transfer.

For best results:

✓ Use transparent PNG files

✓ Remove unwanted backgrounds

✓ Double-check exported artwork before sending

What Resolution Should My Artwork Be?

Higher resolution generally produces better results.

As a guide:

Recommended

300 DPI

Minimum

150 DPI

Avoid:

  • Screenshots

  • Social media downloads

  • Tiny logo files

  • Images copied from websites

These often appear sharp on a phone screen but become blurry when printed.

Designing at the Correct Size

Where possible, create your artwork at the size you want it printed.

Common sizes include:

Left Chest Logo

80–100mm wide

Front Design

200–300mm wide

Large Back Print

250–300mm wide

Sleeve Print

50–100mm wide

Designing at the correct size helps maintain quality and ensures the finished print matches your expectations.

Can I Use AI-Generated Artwork?

Yes, but with caution.

AI-generated images can create impressive designs, but they often contain issues that become obvious when printed.

Common problems include:

  • Low resolution exports

  • Strange details

  • Inconsistent text

  • Unwanted backgrounds

  • Compression artifacts

If your artwork was created using AI, we recommend sending it through before ordering so we can check whether it needs further preparation.

Can I Use Multiple Designs on One Sheet?

Absolutely.

Many customers use gang sheets to maximise the available print area.

Gang sheets allow multiple designs on a single sheet, such as:

  • Logos

  • Names

  • Numbers

  • Neck labels

  • Small graphics

  • Team branding

This can be a cost-effective option for businesses, clubs, and clothing brands.

Common Artwork Mistakes

Avoid these common issues:

Low Resolution Images

Small files often become blurry when enlarged.

Screenshots

Screenshots rarely provide suitable print quality.

Incorrect Backgrounds

White or coloured backgrounds may print if not removed.

Tiny Text

Very small text can become difficult to read when printed.

Poor Contrast

Designs with little contrast may not stand out on certain garment colours.

Before You Submit Your Artwork

Use this simple checklist:

✓ High-resolution file

✓ Transparent background where required

✓ Correct spelling

✓ Correct sizing

✓ Suitable file format

✓ Artwork checked before uploading

Taking a few minutes to review your file can help avoid delays and ensure the best possible result.
